Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)

June 10, 2026 by nataliebirch

Treat Sun Damage, Spider Veins, and More in Los Angeles

Aging and sun exposure can create uneven brown pigmentation and pronounced red blood vessels on your skin. One way to reduce the resulting uneven appearance is with Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), which uses gentle pulses of optimized light to even out your skin tone. When you visit Skin Care and Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills for IPL in the Los Angeles area, you will first have an assessment so we can be sure intense pulsed light is the best choice based on your skin and goals.

What can intense pulsed light (ipl) treat?

Intense pulsed light is primarily used for imperfections caused by sun damage, but can also be applied to a range of cosmetic skin conditions on the face, chest, and hands. These include acne, freckles, birthmarks, melasma, broken blood vessels, varicose veins, age spots, discoloration, wrinkles, redness, rosacea, and scars. It is also used for hair reduction.

Men and women who are susceptible to hyperpigmentation, have sensitive skin, have recently tanned, have certain skin conditions, or are taking some medications may not be good candidates for intense pulsed light. One of our physicians can assess your skin to determine whether IPL is right for you.

Ready to learn more about intense pulsed light (IPL) in Los Angeles? Request a consultation with us online or call our office at 310.246.0495 for more information.

Intense pulsed light explained

Much like laser treatments, the heat generated by IPL is absorbed by melanin-producing cells and blood vessels that create unwanted pigmentation on the skin’s surface. This ultimately causes lesions to flake away and visible vessels to collapse. The body also creates new cells to replace what has been lost as it also replenishes dwindling collagen.

As opposed to laser treatments, however, IPL emits several different, scattered wavelengths of broad-spectrum light. In this non-ablative treatment, light penetrates the outer layer without causing damage to the skin or surrounding tissues.

The IPL procedure is virtually painless. After the skin in the treatment site has been cleansed, a cool gel is applied to reduce discomfort. Depending on the severity of the condition and the desired result, patients can expect one to three treatments. Recovery time is a matter of hours.

Some improvements will be visible right away, though the most dramatic effects typically take days and weeks to be seen. Additional IPL sessions may be necessary to achieve the desired result. The end result will be clearer skin that has a more youthful and healthy appearance.

How to maintain results from intense pulsed light

Typically, as this light treatment causes very limited damage, there is no significant recovery period. Patients can return to their activities shortly after their IPL session, but may experience mild swelling, redness, or bruising for the first few days. The skin is often particularly sensitive during this time.

After an IPL treatment, it’s important to avoid exposure to direct sunlight or UV radiation from artificial sources, as well as waxing, hot water, chemical peels, and blood thinners, until the skin has completely healed. Patients should avoid using makeup if their skin feels sore, moisturize regularly, and apply a cleanser designed for sensitive skin.

Beyond IPL: other light and laser options

Depending on your individual cosmetic needs, there are a variety of light and laser alternatives available at Skin Care & Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills. Laser skin resurfacing with Fraxel® DUAL laser is effective for addressing wrinkles and issues relating to skin texture and tone, working by targeting the skin with a pixelated pattern of light to create micro-injuries that stimulate skin cell turnover and collagen regeneration. Additionally, microneedling can be used for skin rejuvenation to kickstart collagen production, improve skin laxity, and help topical products to better penetrate the skin.

Our Board-Certified and Cosmetic Fellowship-Trained Dermatologists have collectively performed more than 25,000 resurfacing procedures and have been acknowledged as leaders in the field of cosmetic dermatology. Our team of accomplished dermatologists work together to provide Los Angeles-area patients with the service and care needed to safely and effectively rejuvenate the skin with light and laser skin resurfacing solutions.

Light vs. Laser Skin Resurfacing: What’s The Difference?

Light Therapy

Light and laser skin resurfacing includes gentle light therapies that use multiple wavelengths of scattered light to target pigmentation, redness, and sun damage. These light treatments work by delivering broad-spectrum energy that penetrates the skin without damaging the surface, making them a gentler option for improving skin tone and reducing minor discoloration. Ideal for mild concerns and lighter skin tones, light therapies usually require several sessions to achieve gradual, natural-looking results with minimal downtime and a refreshed, balanced complexion.

Laser Treatments

In contrast, light and laser skin resurfacing also covers powerful laser treatments designed to address deeper skin concerns such as wrinkles, scars, and significant texture or pigmentation issues. Lasers emit focused beams of energy that precisely remove damaged skin layers and stimulate collagen production, offering more dramatic and longer-lasting improvements. While recovery time varies by laser type, these treatments provide transformative results and are best suited for patients seeking significant skin renewal, with careful professional evaluation to ensure safety and effectiveness.

Our Advanced Light and Laser Skin Resurfacing Solutions

Are you wondering, “What are the most effective light and laser skin resurfacing treatments?” or “Which light and laser treatments are best for me?” Some light-based treatments use actual lasers, while others employ intense light of a specific wavelength. At Skin Care and Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills only board-certified cosmetic dermatologists perform injectable and laser treatments.

How Do Light and Laser Skin Resurfacing Bring Out Your Best Skin?

Though each light and laser skin resurfacing treatment has its own specific details, in general, they all work in a similar way: The skin absorbs light energy as heat, which can be used to impact pigmented lesions, visible red blood vessels, unwanted hair follicles, and other cosmetic problems. Heat damage to specifically targeted cells can lead lesions to flake away, cause unnecessary vessels to seal up and wither away, and damage hair follicles so they no longer require regular shaving, plucking, or waxing to maintain. The heat can also trigger new collagen production, which can improve the skin’s look and tone over a course of weeks and months. When handled by a trained dermatologist, the lights and lasers are used with precision, focusing solely on the targeted area.

Refresh & Recover: Your Guide to Healing After Light and Laser Skin Resurfacing

“What is the recovery process for laser treatment?” This is another common question. All of the laser skin resurfacing treatments also have a similar feel and outcome. Most light and laser skin resurfacing patients typically experience a mild sunburn sensation, which resolves quickly and minimal to no downtime after their session. Patients are directed to keep the treated area out of direct sunlight while the skin improves, so as to avoid exposing the sensitive skin to ultraviolet radiation.

Beyond the Glow: What Are Some Other Options That Complement Light and Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Curious about which treatments pair best with light and laser skin resurfacing? Many women and men who choose light and laser skin resurfacing at our practice also like to combine it with BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments for enhanced results. While BOTOX® is highly effective at smoothing dynamic wrinkles caused by facial movement, pairing it with light and laser skin resurfacing can improve overall skin texture, tone, and brightness. Light and laser skin resurfacing targets pigmentation, redness, and unevenness, while BOTOX® focuses on relaxing muscles to reduce wrinkles.

Adding dermal fillers to the combination can restore lost volume in areas like the cheeks and lips, complementing both BOTOX® and light and laser skin resurfacing. Together, these treatments provide a comprehensive approach to rejuvenation, delivering a refreshed, youthful complexion. If you’re considering light and laser skin resurfacing alongside other cosmetic treatments like BOTOX®, Skin Care and Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills can help customize a plan to achieve your best look.

To further enhance the benefits of light and laser skin resurfacing, many patients also opt for microneedling, chemical peels, or medical-grade facials. Microneedling stimulates collagen production by creating tiny, controlled micro-injuries, helping to refine skin texture and reduce fine lines. Chemical peels gently exfoliate the outer skin layers, revealing smoother, brighter skin and improving issues like discoloration and uneven tone. Medical-grade facials provide deep cleansing and nourishment that support the skin’s healing and rejuvenation after light and laser skin resurfacing treatments. Combining light and laser skin resurfacing with these options can amplify your results and help maintain a radiant, healthy complexion over time.

SCULPTRA®

STIMULATE NATURAL COLLAGEN PRODUCTION WITH OUR BOARD-CERTIFIED AND COSMETIC FELLOWSHIP- TRAINED DERMATOLOGISTS SERVING BEVERLY HILLS, LOS ANGELES, AND BEYOND

Many dermal fillers work by adding volume, typically in the form of a hyaluronic acid-based gel. Sculptra® is different. With injectable Sculptra®, the Los Angeles-based team of Board-Certified and Cosmetic Fellowship-Trained Dermatologists at Skin Care & Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills stimulates the skin’s natural collagen-building processes to diminish facial wrinkles and provide especially long-lasting results.” To “and provide especially long-lasting results. The injectable is what’s known as a poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) collagen stimulator, used primarily to address signs of aging related to volume loss , such as nasolabial folds (smile lines), marionette lines, and chin wrinkles. Instead of adding volume that is visible right away, the (PLLA) prompts collagen generation, which gradually fills in lines for a result that can last up to two years.

Our dermatologists are leaders in the world of injectables, including Sculptra®. We have written books, authored more than 150 peer-reviewed studies, and delivered more than 300 lectures on injectables and other subjects related to the aesthetics industry . Our universally recognized leadership in the field and deep experience with the breadth of filler options available allows us to consider highly nuanced effects and benefits when guiding a patient toward the treatment best able to help them achieve their aesthetic goals.

Radiesse® in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles

June 10, 2026 by nataliebirch

Loss of elasticity and volume can result in wrinkles, fine lines, and a sagging complexion, all of which rob your skin of that healthy youthful appearance. Dr. Jones and the Skin Care and Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills team Los Angeles commonly uses RADIESSE® to treat loss of fat in the face, hands, and the jawline. Dr. Derek Jones has performed over 70,000 filler procedures and when you visit Skin Care and Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills for a personal consultation, we will assess you to see exactly what you will need to help improve your appearance.

Radiesse® Explained

RADIESSE® Volumizing Filler is a long lasting, FDA-approved dermal filler. First used in dentistry and reconstructive surgery, it has a long safety record and is considered a top treatment option for moderate-to-severe creases, such as nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and frown lines, at our Beverly Hills office. RADIESSE® is also used to enhance fullness of the cheeks and other facial contours.

RADIESSE® works with the body to plump and smooth skin. With age, collagen in the skin breaks down, diminishing facial volume and elasticity. Loss of collagen results in wrinkles, facial lines, and skin laxity, which diminishes the skin’s fresh appearance.

Made of tiny calcium-based microspheres suspended in a water-based gel, RADIESSE® helps restore and rebuild lost collagen. The calcium-based microspheres act as a scaffold under the skin, stimulating collagen production and providing a structure where your own natural collagen can grow. This process continues for several months, restoring volume, flexibility, and strength to your skin.

Over time, your body absorbs the tiny calcium-based microspheres and the gel, leaving behind only your own natural collagen. The results are immediate and last a year or more in many patients at our Beverly Hills office!

RADIESSE® helps men and women in Los Angeles achieve natural long-lasting facial rejuvenation by:

  • Replenishing your skin’s lost volume
  • Stimulating collagen production for long-lasting results
  • Refreshing your appearance

Because the calcium-based microspheres are biosynthetically produced (no animals or animal products are used), there is little risk of an allergic reaction. No skin testing is required prior to treatment with RADIESSE® and side effects are rare.

Your Radiesse® Treatment

RADIESSE® treatment at Skin Care & Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills is a simple, safe and minimally invasive procedure that can be done over your lunch hour. The injections are performed with a very fine needle and can be combined with lidocaine (an anesthetic) to significantly reduce injection site pain. A topical numbing cream may also be applied.

Results of RADIESSE® treatment are immediately visible and natural looking! Best of all, they can last up to a year or longer in some patients.

Following the procedure, the Skin Care and Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills team may massage the treatment sites to make sure RADIESSE® is properly distributed and the results are even. Ice may also be applied for approximately 10 minutes to help minimize swelling, inflammation and bruising at the injection sites.

Some people may experience minor swelling or bruising around the injection sites. However, these reactions quickly subside. Most patients return to their normal, daily activities right after their visit.

Many of the men and women we treat opt to combine other skin fillers or BOTOX® Cosmetic with RADIESSE® treatment with for complete facial rejuvenation.

The Los Angeles-area physician-only practice offers the dermal filler to patients who want to smooth out fine lines around the lip and mouth area without creating the appearance of too much volume. Why Would I Need Belotero Balance®?

Facial aging happens to everyone as hyaluronic acid and collagen predictably break down and diminish in the skin. While maintaining a healthy diet, staying hydrated, and—most importantly—avoiding exposure to ultraviolet radiation can keep skin looking youthful for a long time, an aging body naturally becomes less efficient at replacing key elements that are vital to keeping wrinkles at bay. As levels of hyaluronic acid (responsible for well-moisturized skin) and collagen (necessary for a facial structure and tone marked by roundness and fullness) drop, lines begin to form. These may take the form of severe nasolabial folds or fine lines that make the area around the mouth look wrinkled and aged.

These lines are known as “static wrinkles” because they appear as the skin loses volume, not because of the dynamic motion of facial muscles. That means adding volume can be a safe, efficient, and effective way to achieve a smoother, younger look in key areas.

Anyone unhappy with age-related lines around the mouth and in other regions of the face may be a good candidate for Belotero Balance®. A dermatologist on the Skin Care & Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills team can assess the lines you want to address and suggest a filler, other injectable, or combination of solutions intended to not only smooth the wrinkles, but maintain a balanced look.

Our Physicians internationally regarded key opinion leaders and researchers in minimally invasive facial aesthetics.

Belotero Balance® Explained

Belotero Balance® is a hyaluronic acid dermal filler ideally suited to treat fine lines. Belotero Balance® outperforms other hyaluronic acids for fine lines and creates a smooth appearance without creating the look of too much volume, especially around the lip and mouth area. The smooth and cohesive gel evenly integrates with your own dermal tissues and discreetly enhances your facial contours. Since hyaluronic acid molecules have an affinity for bonding with water molecules, it also rehydrates your skin for a radiant appearance. In clinical studies, 97 percent of patients showed visible improvements after just one treatment with Belotero Balance®.

Clinical studies also revealed that 66 percent of patients continued to show a visible improvement nine months after a single treatment. Most clients opt for follow-up treatments after six to 12 months to maintain a fresh, youthful appearance. Your own recommended maintenance schedule will depend on your cosmetic goals, lifestyle factors, and other variables to be discussed at a personal consultation.

Your Belotero Balance® Treatment

All injection sessions at Skin Care & Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills, including Belotero Balance®, begin with cleaning the injection site. Patients who are concerned about how the needle will feel can request an anesthetic to reduce sensation in the treatment area. After this is applied, if necessary, your dermatologist will begin making the carefully placed injections. In some cases, the injected filler may be gently massaged in order to ensure its even distribution. The amount of filler needed will depend on the patient, and the entire treatment session should last only minutes.

Belotero® can be injected very superficially into fine and “etched in” lines, where it tends to become very smooth and has less risk of creating too much volume or lumps and bumps, as may happen with other hyaluronic acid-based fillers.

Smoother skin should be apparent right away, though Belotero Balance® injections can result in minor swelling, bruising, or both. These are typical skin reactions and require no special care, as the swelling will go down and the bruising will fade on its own.

Patients are free to be as active as they’d like after a session. No rest or recuperation are needed. As always, however, everyone is encouraged to wear sun protection, including a high-quality sunscreen, to protect against UV damage.

With proper care, Belotero Balance® results can last for six months or longer. Patients can return for new injections when the volume added from a previous injection session starts to diminish.

More Dermal Filler and Injectable Options

In an effort to accommodate a wide variety of patients with specific needs, Skin Care & Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills offers multiple dermal fillers and other highly researched and trusted injectables. Some of the most popular options are Juvéderm® products, including Ultra, Voluma®, Vollure™, and Volbella®. While all of them add volume to the skin to combat signs of facial aging, each of these fillers from Allergan has a particular focus, with its formula matching its intended use, whether restoring youthful facial contours, subtly enhancing the lips themselves, or reducing the severity of nasolabial folds.

Another family of fillers, Restylane® by Galderma, also includes multiple unique formulations. Both lines are, like Belotero Balance®, hyaluronic acid-based fillers. Radiesse® takes a different approach, introducing a water-based gel filled with small calcium spheres to not only add volume, but also to stimulate specialized cells that create collagen.

Apart from dermal fillers, Dr. Derek Jones and the team also provide BOTOX® injections to smooth out dynamic wrinkles. Unlike static wrinkles, these lines develop as muscle activity in the face pulls the skin into fold-forming positions over and over again over years and decades.

The Skin Care & Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills team excels at matching the ideal treatment to the patient, basing a recommended customized plan on each person’s individual variables: condition of skin, severity of wrinkles, desired goal, medical history, etc. Anyone considering Belotero Balance® to address signs of aging around the mouth and elsewhere should come prepared to have questions answered and develop a long-term strategy for looking their best.

Treating Melanoma: What You Need to Know About This Serious Skin Cancer

Melanoma, also called malignant melanoma, is a dangerous form of skin cancer that arises from melanocytes—the cells that produce your skin’s pigment. Treating melanoma early is crucial because these cells can grow uncontrollably and spread quickly. Although less common than other skin cancers, melanoma is the most serious due to its high risk of spreading if not caught in time. Treating melanoma promptly improves the chances of successful outcomes and helps prevent the cancer from advancing to other parts of the body. Staying aware of the signs and seeking expert care are key steps in effectively treating melanoma.

Treating Melanoma Begins with Early Detection: Know the Signs and Symptoms

At our practice, we believe that early detection is the most important step in achieving the best possible outcome when it comes to melanoma treatment. This aggressive form of skin cancer can often be treated successfully, especially when identified in its earliest stages. That’s why understanding what to look for is essential. Melanoma may develop as a new spot on the skin or as changes to an existing mole.

Wondering, “What does melanoma look like?” We encourage patients to become familiar with the ABCDEs of melanoma: Asymmetry, irregular Borders, multiple or unusual Colors, Diameter larger than 6mm, and any mole that is Evolving over time. If you notice a lesion that is changing, itching, bleeding, or simply looks different from the rest, it’s important to have it evaluated promptly.

Our Board-Certified and Cosmetic Fellowship-Trained Dermatologists specialize in identifying and treating melanoma and other forms of skin cancer with precision and care. Through advanced diagnostic tools and expert clinical judgment, we aim to detect melanoma early—when it is most treatable—and guide you through your care with clarity and confidence. If you’re concerned about a spot or lesion, we welcome you to schedule an evaluation and take a proactive step toward protecting your skin health.

What are the Main Options for Treating Melanoma?

Wondering, “What happens next if you are diagnosed with melanoma?” Today’s methods of treating melanoma offer more hope than ever before—especially when guided by early detection and personalized care. As of 2025, treatment plans are increasingly tailored to each patient’s specific diagnosis, with advancements that combine proven techniques and emerging innovations. For early-stage melanoma, surgical excision remains the gold standard, often performed in-office with excellent outcomes. In cases where tissue preservation is a priority, Mohs micrographic surgery may be recommended for treating melanoma, particularly for skin cancer tumors on cosmetically sensitive areas like the face.

For more advanced or aggressive cases, systemic therapies continue to evolve. Immunotherapy—particularly checkpoint inhibitors—has shown remarkable success in helping the body’s own immune system target and destroy cancer cells. Targeted therapies, which act on specific genetic mutations such as BRAF, are also widely used and often well-tolerated. More recently, combination approaches using both immunotherapy and targeted medications have become more refined, offering greater precision and fewer side effects.

What Is Skin Cancer and What Causes It?

Skin cancer is the result of abnormal cell growth in the outer layers of the skin, typically caused by damage to the DNA within those cells. This damage triggers mutations that lead to uncontrolled growth, often presenting as lesions, bumps, or rough patches that evolve over time. But what causes skin cancer, exactly? The most common culprit is prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or tanning beds, which breaks down cellular DNA and impairs the skin’s natural repair mechanisms.

In addition to UV radiation, other skin cancer causes include fair skin, a history of sunburns, a weakened immune system, exposure to carcinogenic chemicals, and chronic inflammation or injury to the skin. Genetics can also play a role, particularly if you have a family history of skin cancer. While some risk factors can’t be changed, many are controllable—and with proper sun protection and regular dermatologic screenings, skin cancer is often preventable and highly treatable when caught early.

At Skin Care & Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills, our Board-Certified and Cosmetic Fellowship-Trained Dermatologists combine expertise in skin cancer surgery with a commitment to cosmetic excellence and compassionate care. If you’ve noticed a suspicious spot or are due for your annual skin check, schedule a consultation today. Let’s work together toward skin cancer prevention, detection, and long-term skin health.

What Are the Most Common Symptoms of Skin Cancer?

Recognizing the symptoms of skin cancer early is key to timely diagnosis and treatment. So, what does skin cancer look like? It often appears as a new or changing growth on the skin—such as a mole that changes shape or color, a rough or scaly patch, a non-healing sore, or a bump that bleeds or crusts. These signs may develop slowly over time or emerge more suddenly, depending on the type of skin cancer involved.

As for how skin cancer affects you, the impact varies by cancer type and how early it’s detected. In its early stages, skin cancer typically causes localized symptoms, such as a visible lesion or irritation in sun-exposed areas. Left untreated, some forms—like melanoma—can spread deeper into the skin and to other parts of the body, affecting lymph nodes and internal organs. This is why early detection is critical.

If you notice a skin change that doesn’t heal, bleeds repeatedly, or continues to evolve in shape, color, or size, it’s important to consult a board-certified dermatologist. Prompt evaluation and biopsy can distinguish harmless spots from cancerous lesions—and pave the way for effective treatment.

How to Spot Skin Cancer: The ABCDEs of Melanoma

Recognizing the early signs of skin cancer can lead to faster diagnosis and more effective treatment. Dermatologists often recommend two key strategies to help identify suspicious spots: the ABCDEs of melanoma and the “ugly duckling” rule.

The ABCDEs are a simple, visual guide for evaluating moles and lesions:

  • A – Asymmetry: One half of the mole does not match the other.
  • B – Border: Edges are irregular, ragged, or blurred.
  • C – Color: Multiple colors or uneven distribution of color.
  • D – Diameter: Larger than 6 mm (about the size of a pencil eraser), though melanomas can be smaller.
  • E – Evolving: Any change in size, shape, color, or texture over time.

In addition, the “ugly duckling” rule refers to spotting a mole or lesion that looks noticeably different from the others on your body. Most people have a pattern to their moles, so a mole that stands out—darker, larger, irregular—may be cause for concern.

Using both methods together can help you and your dermatologist catch skin cancer in its earliest, most treatable stages.

A Closer Look at Skin Cancer Types and How We Treat Them

One of the most important steps in developing an effective skin cancer treatment plan is accurately identifying the type of skin cancer—if present. Suspicious moles, discolored or rough patches, and unusual growths may be signs of malignancy, but they can also be benign. A skin biopsy provides a definitive diagnosis by determining whether cancerous cells are present, allowing our Board-Certified and Cosmetic Fellowship-Trained Dermatologists to recommend the most appropriate treatment options based on clinical findings.

Basal Cell Carcinoma

This is not only the most common form of skin cancer, it is the most common form of all cancers diagnosed in the United States each year. It gets its name from where it forms: in the basal cells, which sit at the bottom of the outermost layer of skin, known as the epidermis. Skin cancer treatment for basal cell carcinoma typically involves its removal, with Mohs being a very effective option, though topical or oral medications may also work to clear it up.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma

When cancer forms in certain cells found throughout the epidermis, it’s known as squamous cell carcinoma. Less common than basal cell carcinoma, this form of cancer can more readily spread, but is still effectively treated by removing the cancerous cells. Again, Mohs proves to be a skin cancer treatment method that removes the malignant cells while preserving the greatest amount of healthy tissue.

Melanoma

The most deadly and aggressive form of skin cancer is also the least common. Melanoma forms in the cells that produce pigment, and—if not caught early— can soon spread to other organs and systems throughout the body. Mohs is a possible solution, and the physicians at Skin Care & Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills offer skin cancer treatment options that make use of modern technology and techniques tailored to each specific patient.

Skin Cancer vs. Actinic Keratosis: What’s the Difference?

Actinic keratosis is a precancerous lesion caused by cumulative sun exposure, often seen as rough, scaly patches in sun-exposed areas. Though not cancerous, these lesions may evolve into squamous cell carcinoma if untreated.

Key differences:

  • Actinic keratosis is precancerous; skin cancer involves malignant cells
  • AKs are usually flat and flaky; skin cancers can be raised, bleeding, or irregular
  • AKs may respond to topical treatments; skin cancers often require surgical intervention

Regular check-ups can help distinguish between these conditions and ensure timely care.

Frequently Asked Questions About Skin Cancer

Does skin cancer spread?

Yes. While basal cell carcinoma typically remains localized, squamous cell carcinoma and especially melanoma can spread to lymph nodes and distant organs if not treated promptly.

Is skin cancer itchy?

Some skin cancers may cause itching, tenderness, or irritation, though many remain painless. Any persistent skin change should be evaluated.

Which skin cancer is the deadliest?

Melanoma is the most dangerous form due to its aggressive nature and high risk of spreading throughout the body.

What do early signs of skin cancer look like?

Look for new or changing lesions, non-healing sores, irregular moles, or patches that bleed, crust, or grow over time.

How does your body feel if you have skin cancer?

Most early-stage skin cancers cause only localized symptoms, such as a bump or sore. Advanced cases may lead to fatigue or swollen lymph nodes.

What does a mole look like with skin cancer?

A suspicious mole may be asymmetrical, have uneven borders, multiple colors, or change in size. Rapid evolution is a warning sign.

What happens if you’re diagnosed with skin cancer?

One of our dermatologists will perform further evaluation and recommend treatment—typically surgical skin cancer removal—based on the cancer type and severity.

How can I prevent skin cancer?

Use daily SPF, avoid tanning beds, cover exposed skin, and schedule yearly dermatology exams to detect skin changes early.

Skin Cancer Prevention Tips

While advancements in modern dermatologic oncology have made it possible to treat skin cancer with outcomes that prioritize both medical efficacy and cosmetic preservation, the most effective strategy remains prevention. Minimizing risk factors and raising skin cancer awareness are critical components of long-term skin health monitoring and cancer-free outcomes.

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is one of the leading skin cancer causes and a well- documented contributor to both melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer. Both intermittent, high-intensity exposure—such as severe sunburns—and chronic, cumulative exposure from daily outdoor activities can damage the skin over time. Individuals who experienced frequent sunburns during childhood or spent extended periods in the sun without protection are at increased risk, especially if skin lesion evaluation has never been performed.

As part of comprehensive skin cancer prevention and detection, it’s important to incorporate sun safety measures into everyday life. Children and adults alike should apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, 15 minutes before sun exposure—even on overcast days. UV rays are potent enough to penetrate clouds and cause cellular damage. Complementary physical barriers, such as wide-brimmed hats, UV-protective clothing, and sunglasses, offer additional layers of defense

When applying sunscreen, don’t overlook areas often missed during routine application. The tops of the ears, scalp, lips, and feet are all susceptible to sun damage and are frequent sites for suspicious moles and lesions that warrant a professional skin lesion evaluation or skin biopsy procedure.

It’s important to note that skin cancer can also develop in areas not typically exposed to sunlight. While consistent sun protection significantly reduces the likelihood of developing malignancies, no method offers complete immunity. Routine full-body skin exams, performed by a board-certified dermatologist specializing in dermatologic care in Los Angeles, are essential for early detection and intervention

By staying informed about skin cancer symptoms and risk factors, and by practicing consistent protective habits, patients can take a proactive role in preserving their long-term skin health.

Early Detection and Skin Cancer Treatment in Beverly Hills

While prevention serves as the first and most powerful line of defense against skin cancer, early detection comes a close second—often making the critical difference in patient outcomes. Identifying malignant cells before they have the chance to grow or spread allows your physician to initiate targeted skin cancer treatment at the most manageable stage, improving both prognosis and cosmetic results.

Every skin cancer prevention strategy should include annual full-body skin exams with a board-certified dermatologist. These routine visits support ongoing skin health monitoring and give your provider the opportunity to detect suspicious moles or lesions early. If needed, a prompt skin biopsy procedure can confirm the diagnosis and guide timely, effective treatment.

Other Skin Conditions We Treat

In addition to expert diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer, the team at Skin Care & Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills offers comprehensive surgical and medical dermatology services for a wide range of concerns. Mohs Micrographic Surgery

June 10, 2026 by nataliebirch

Mohs micrographic surgery is the most effective and state-of-the-art procedure for treating skin cancer today. It offers the highest potential for recovery, even if the skin cancer has been previously treated by another method and recurred. A Mohs physician, such as Skin Care and Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills’ Dr. Naissan Wesley and Dr. Cory Kosche, is specially trained in surgery, pathology, and reconstruction.

Dr. Wesley completed an intense post-doctoral fellowship approved by the American College of Mohs Surgery, which requires its members to participate in at least a full year of training and hands-on experience after their residency training. She is an expert in all aspects of skin cancer and skin cancer surgery. She specializes in the diagnosis and repair of skin lesions, including cosmetic reconstruction following skin cancer removal, skin grafts, and skin flaps.

Dr. Cory Kosche completed an intensive Mohs Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology Fellowship at the prestigious University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), which requires its members to undergo at least a full year of advanced training and hands-on experience following residency. As a fellowship-trained Mohs micrographic surgeon and board-certified dermatologist, he is an expert in all aspects of skin cancer diagnosis and treatment. He specializes in the removal and repair of skin lesions, including cosmetic reconstruction following skin cancer removal, skin grafts, and skin flaps. In addition to his surgical expertise, Dr. Kosche integrates the latest cosmetic dermatology techniques, helping patients achieve both functional recovery and natural-looking aesthetic results.

Before starting Mohs surgery at Skin Care and Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills, you will first have a consultation that includes an assessment to ensure you are a good candidate for the procedure.

Request a consultation with us online or call our office at 310.246.0495 for more information.

Why Choose Mohs Surgery?

Mohs surgery has the highest success rate of all treatments for skin cancer: up to 99 percent.

With the Mohs technique, physicians are able to see beyond the visible disease to precisely identify and remove the entire tumor layer by layer while leaving the surrounding healthy tissue intact and unharmed. As the most exact and precise method of tumor removal, it minimizes the chance of re-growth and lessens the potential for scarring or disfigurement.

Most patients who choose this technique require only a single surgery. It is ideal for skin cancer patients in Los Angeles looking for a procedure that maximizes results and minimizes impact.

What Types of Skin Cancer Does Mohs Treat?

Mohs micrographic surgery is primarily used to treat basal and squamous cell carcinomas, but can be used to treat less common tumors including melanoma.

Mohs Surgery is appropriate when:

  • The cancer is in an area where it is important to preserve healthy tissue for maximum functional and cosmetic result, such as eyelids, nose, ears, lips, fingers, toes, genitals;
  • The cancer was treated previously and recurred;
  • Scar tissue exists in the area of the cancer;
  • The cancer is large;
  • The edges of the cancer cannot be clearly defined;
  • The cancer is growing rapidly or uncontrollably.

Minimal Signs of Surgery

The Mohs technique is also the treatment of choice for cancers of the face and other sensitive areas as it relies on the accuracy of a microscopic surgical procedure to trace the edges of the cancer and ensure complete removal of all tumors down to the roots during the initial surgery.

This practice, used at Skin Care and Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills, results in a minimal amount of healthy tissue removal, reducing impact to the surrounding skin. Its benefits make it a preferred choice for optimizing the aesthetic outcome of skin cancer surgery.

More Details on Mohs

Mohs surgery is performed under local anesthesia and will typically last up to several hours. Since no two patients are the same, the estimated time frame and scope of the surgery will be determined at a consultation at Skin Care and Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills.

Once the cancer has been fully removed, you can talk with your physician about any potential reconstruction options, if they are necessary or desired.

After the successful surgery, you will also want to talk about and schedule some post-surgical visits and check-ups to be sure you are recovering as best as possible and that there are no recurrences of cancer. While Mohs surgery is highly effective at removing various cancers down to their roots, follow-up appointments are one more way to make sure that your skin stays healthy, and the rest of you does, too.

Our Los Angeles dermatology team prides itself on its professionalism and accessibility. To learn more about Mohs micrographic surgery, and to find out if it is the best choice for you, contact Skin Care and Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills.

We have immense experience with virtually every filler option available, which gives us the ability to weigh the various nuanced benefits of each treatment strategy and choose the ideal product for each patient. Our goal (and talent) is to create beautiful results that look natural and last as long as possible. Everyone will notice, but no one will know!

Contact us today to set up a consultation and get started on your own treatments with the RHA® Collection in Los Angeles. Send a message online or call 310.246.0495.

WHAT IS THE RHA® COLLECTION?

RHA® stands for “Resilient Hyaluronic Acid,” which refers to an especially robust form of the sugar molecule that is found naturally throughout the body—including the skin, where its ability to hold 1,000 times its weight in water makes it a critical component in staying well-hydrated and moisturized.

The hyaluronic acid made for the fillers in the RHA® Collection is formulated to more closely resemble the hyaluronic acid made in the skin, which easily adapts to facial movements—especially in highly dynamic areas, such as around the mouth. This gives the results an especially natural look.

There are multiple formulations in the RHA® Collection, each with a specific focus:

RHA® 2

This filler is designed to reduce the appearance of “early” lines, such as perioral lines, which are fine wrinkles that develop around the mouth. It can also subtly enhance the lips by adding volume, “fine tune” the shape of the lips for improved contours and symmetry, and fill in under-eye hollows

RHA® 3

Created to reduce moderate facial lines, this filler typically targets nasolabial folds, corner lines, marionette lines, and similar signs of aging related to volume loss and muscle activity.

RHA® 4

Similar to its counterparts, this filler also targets signs of aging on the lower face—but is used for patients with deeper, more severe corner lines and nasolabial folds. It can also be used to restore lost mid-face volume.

REDENSITY

Intended for “delicate” work, Redensity smooths vertical lip lines (sometimes called “smoker’s lines”) and similar fine wrinkles.

KEY RHA® COLLECTION DETAILS

Our Board-Certified and Cosmetic Fellowship-Trained Dermatologists are adept at quickly and expertly performing injections, which makes for natural-looking and long-lasting results that don’t take long to administer. A single RHA® session can be as short as a lunch break, with specifics depending on the area or areas being treated.

Expect some initial side effects, such as bruising and swelling, which will somewhat obscure the results at first. The added volume will be visible right away, but will appear increasingly natural and ideal as signs of the treatment fade in the days after a session.

WHY CHOOSE SKIN CARE & LASER PHYSICIANS FOR THE RHA® COLLECTION IN LOS ANGELES?

Our practice is the only one in LA with a staff made up entirely of board-certified dermatologists who have completed a year-long post-residence cosmetic fellowship in the advanced use of injectables, lasers, and medical rejuvenation procedures and technology.

We don’t just lead the cosmetic dermatology curve, we create it.

HOW DO I SCHEDULE A CONSULTATION FOR THE RHA® COLLECTION AT SKIN CARE & LASER PHYSICIANS IN LOS ANGELES?

Getting started with a “refilled” and rejuvenated look is simple: Call our office to learn more about the RHA® Collection in the Los Angeles area, or request a consultation online.
