How Can PRP in Beverly Hills Help With Hair Restoration?

March 12, 2017 by nataliebirch Leave a Comment

We’ve come a long way since wigs were first invented. Hair loss has long been a problem plaguing people—probably for as long as we’ve had hair to worry about losing. Over the years, coverings and cures for baldness have come and gone, with only a few proving to be effective and reliable. Surgical transplantation has been one of the most recent methods proven to make a difference, but not everyone can (or wants to) invest the time and money necessary for the procedure. More recently, people have come to see results from a nonsurgical, natural option: PRP. Beverly Hills physicians Dr. Derek Jones, Dr. Naissan Wesley, and Dr. Jeanette Black use cutting-edge technology to harvest platelets from patients, process them into platelet-rich plasma (PRP), and inject them into the scalp.

PRP has been used for years to heal sports injuries and in similar medical capacities. The power of a patient’s own blood harnessed to make aesthetic improvements is currently a growing field, with new applications regularly being explored. For hair restoration, it’s been found that concentrated platelets stimulate the regeneration of scalp tissue and the follicles it holds. New life for follicles means new hair for you.

Note that this treatment is intended for both men and women experiencing the challenges of androgenic alopecia, which is hereditary hair loss. Thinning or balding due to medical conditions, diet, or other problems require unique solutions. For that reason, it’s important to work with a physician to determine the cause of any hair loss before settling on a treatment.

New Applicators Save Time for Patients Choosing CoolSculpting® in Beverly Hills

March 5, 2017 by nataliebirch Leave a Comment

While incredibly effective when it comes to reducing unwanted fat, CoolSculpting® at our Beverly Hills practice has historically taken a couple of hours for a single session. Though 120 minutes is a small investment for slimmed-down results that can last a lifetime if properly maintained, the technology now exists to get the procedure done even faster—so we brought it in.

Thanks to a range of new CoolSculpting® applicators, patients who want to lose stubborn bulges can pop in for a session that last about as long as a lunch break.

CoolAdvantage Plus™ can tackle a large abdominal region in just 45 minutes, with even less time required for a treatment targeting a smaller section of the belly, love handles, banana rolls, or bra fat. In that short span, fat cells are damaged so they can be processed and eliminated in the following weeks.

The system is designed to read tissues as it works, ensuring consistent results. That said, a physician oversees each treatment, drawing on experience with both CoolSculpting® and the aesthetics of human anatomy to customize each session and maximize patient satisfaction.

Life doesn’t stop, so there’s no reason to take more time out of your busy schedule than you have to in order to get contours that better define your arms, legs, back, or front.

Learn more about the advances to the already modern CoolSculpting® process at Skin Care & Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills, staffed by physicians Dr. Derek Jones, Dr. Naissan Wesley, and Dr. Jeanette Black. Call (310) 246-0495 or visit skincareandlaser.com.

What Exactly Is a Dermatologist?

February 27, 2017 by nataliebirch Leave a Comment

Here at Skin Care & Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills, we’re proud of the fact that we’re a physician-only practice, meaning every consultation, treatment, and procedure is handled personally by a physician, not a nurse or assistant or someone similar. Since, as the name indicates, the practice focuses on skin care, the physicians are dermatologists. West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, and Los Angeles-area men and women are probably used to hearing that term for a medical professional—especially given the ongoing Southern California love affair between sun and skin—but may not know what it means beyond a doctor who specializes in skin.

While skin is certainly a huge component of a dermatologist’s focus, the specialist is also concerned with the health and appearance of hair, fingernails and toenails, and mucous membranes found in the nose, mouth, and eyelids. Problems a board-certified dermatologist is qualified to can range from the cosmetic (as with wrinkles) to the life-threatening (as with melanoma).

The American Academy of Dermatology reports that, among their various activities, dermatologists diagnose and treat more than 3,000 diseases that impact the skin, hair, nails, and membranes.

At minimum, a dermatologist must earn a bachelor’s degree and a medical degree, followed by a one-year internship and at least three years spent in a dermatology residency program.

From there, a dermatologist can voluntarily become board certified, which requires obtaining a license to practice medicine, passing examinations administered by one of three boards (the American Board of Dermatology, American Osteopathic Association, and/or Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada), and fulfilling any other necessary board-specific requirements. Even after achieving certification, physicians may have to maintain that certification through new rounds of testing once a decade.

The three dermatologists at Skin Care & Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills are board certified and prepared to treat a range of cosmetic and medical problems. For more information, call 310-246-0495.

A Brief History of BOTOX®

February 21, 2017 by nataliebirch Leave a Comment

With BOTOX® going strong as the world’s most popular cosmetic treatment, more and more people are not just learning about the injectable—they’re choosing it to smooth away forehead lines and crow’s feet for months at a time. The year 2016 brought reports of more men and women than ever before choosing BOTOX® for cosmetic reasons, but it also saw the injectable reach the latest in a string of medical milestones, as the FDA approved it for treating lower limb spasticity.

With growing popularity often comes a growing set of questions, led by a common curiosity on the part of the public: How safe is BOTOX®? Beverly Hills’ Dr. Derek Jones has performed more than 70,000 procedures involving the injectable and served as an investigator on the clinical trials exploring its efficacy and safety for the treatment of crow’s feet, giving him particular insight into how it works and its effects on the skin and body.

Long before those trials, however, BOTOX® was put to use in medical settings, starting with trials that led to the 1989 approvals for its use in curbing both eyelid spasms and strabismus, which causes crossed eyes. Five more medical approvals followed over the years, approving it for treating certain neck muscle spasms, hyperhidrosis, chronic migraines, upper limb spasticity, and overactive bladders.

The uncountable computer files and reams of paper devoted to these trials, as well as the rigorous cosmetic trials, all point to the injectable as not just safe, but an effective solution for a variety of problems.

Learn more about BOTOX® in Beverly Hills, and discuss its safety and history with a trusted and board-certified dermatologist, by calling Skin Care & Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills at 310-246-0495.

A New Team Member and Interest in Kybella®: Beverly Hills’ Dr. Derek Jones Looks at 2016’s Highlights

January 24, 2017 by nataliebirch Leave a Comment

At Skin Care & Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills, many of our patients measure time in months, counting ahead to determine how long the results of their injectables or other cosmetic treatments will last and ensuring they maintain beautiful, healthy skin all year long. Looking back at this past year, our own team of physicians has realized: What a difference 12 months can make!

The year 2016 started with Dr. Derek Jones filming a segment for The Doctors, which aired on Feb. 1. Focusing on Kybella®, the Beverly Hills-based dermatologist explained how the product works to destroy fat cells that make up a double chin, drawing on his experience as lead investigator for the injectable’s U.S. clinical trials.

February also saw an uptick of interest in “Brotox”—the male-centric name given to BOTOX® injections tailored specifically for men’s faces. Media attention through the spring continued to drive increased acceptance of the treatment, which guys tend to use to get a refreshed look, as opposed to knocking years off of their appearance.

Their growing interest shouldn’t really be a surprise, since the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery announced in the summer of 2016 that the number of people thinking about getting a cosmetic medical procedure has practically doubled since 2013 in the United States.

In September, the practice officially welcomed Dr. Jeanette Black as a physician serving alongside Dr. Derek Jones and Dr. Naissan Wesley. The new dermatologist stepped up after her yearlong fellowship at Skin Care & Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills, turning the physician-only duo into a trio offering doctor-based care for every patient.

The year ended with the lip-plumping Volbella® becoming increasingly available throughout the country. Though the FDA approved the new Juvederm® product in June, patients couldn’t get it until October.

What will 2017 have in store? If the previous year is any indication, it will bring even more interest in cosmetic treatments for women and men alike, as well as innovations designed to keep skin looking young and healthy for months—and years—to come.

Learn more about any of the treatments mentioned here, including Kybella®, from the Beverly Hills-based physicians Dr. Derek Jones, Dr. Naissan Wesley, and Dr. Jeanette Black. Call (310) 246-0495 or visit skincareandlaser.com.

More Cold-Weather Skin Care Tips for Beverly Hills

November 18, 2016 by nataliebirch Leave a Comment

It’s that time of year again. With colder, wetter days at hand and a string of holidays on the horizon, winter is on its way. Given the busy—and even stressful—nature of the season, proper skin care can easily take a back seat to shopping, cleaning, planning, prepping, and social engagements (as well as recovering from them).

Give your skin the gift of good health this season, starting with these tips from our board-certified dermatologists. (As Beverly Hills and Hollywood-area dermatology experts. the team is also encouraging Southern Californians to re-visit last year’s advice for winter skin health.)

• Enjoy a colorful diet. Vibrant yellow, orange, and red fruits and vegetables, rich purple beets, and leafy greens are all packed with antioxidants, which can help reduce inflammation and improve overall body health. Reduced chances of inflammation lower the likelihood of an acne outbreak and keep skin looking more youthful longer. It’s OK to indulge every now and then during the holiday season, but consider fish loaded with healthy fats, nuts, and beans when looking for protein. Eat sweets and sugary treats in moderation. Holiday baking is often a welcome activity, but overly fatty foods can have a negative impact on your skin.

• Don’t drop your skin care routine. As noted above, the steady stream of winter holidays, starting with Thanksgiving (or Halloween, for some people), can make life hectic. Given the go, go, go feeling of the season, it may be tempting to set proper skin care aside as an unnecessary addition to a packed morning or day. Resist! Maintaining a routine, from moisturizing in the morning to removing all of your makeup before bed, is vitally important to healthy, beautiful skin.

• Stop putting off a visit to a dermatologist. It’s easy to let this one slide, since it involves setting up an appointment and making a stop at an office. Considering the lifelong benefits of professional dermatological care, however, a small investment now can pay big dividends in the future, whether that’s naturally smooth skin for years, the elimination of an aesthetic problem that’s long been bothering you, or even the identification of a potentially harmful skin condition. Surveys show that most New Year’s Resolutions quickly fizzle out, so don’t wait till Jan. 1 to resolve to make an appointment.

• As always, the Skin Care and Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills team emphasizes staying out of the sun, even if it’s not out for long and stays covered by clouds. Wear sunscreen—yes, even when its overcast—or cover up exposed skin for physical protection from skin-damaging ultraviolet radiation.

Talk to the board-certified Dr. Derek Jones, Dr. Naissan Wesley, and Dr. Jeanette Black at Skin Care and Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills, a physician-only practice serving the Los Angeles and Hollywood areas with dermatology advice and treatments. Call 310-246-0495.

Discover Volbella®, the Newest Injectable from Juvéderm®

November 12, 2016 by nataliebirch Leave a Comment

Dr. Derek Jones has a long history with Juvéderm®. The Los Angeles-area board-certified dermatologist has used the injectable for years in his Dr. Derek Jones Facial Harmonics Approach, and he was instrumental in bringing Voluma® to the United States, serving as the lead investigator for the product’s U.S. FDA studies. As dermal fillers, Juvéderm products are well suited for adding volume where’s needed: correcting nasolabial folds, rounding out the apple of the cheek, and more.

Now, there’s another addition to the family of hyaluronic acid-based fillers. Dubbed Volbella®, this injectable is specifically designed for augmenting lips and smoothing out lines around the mouth.

The FDA approved Juvéderm Volbella® for these uses in June 2016, and the smooth gel will become increasingly available at practices around the country in the coming months.

Volbella® has been approved for use in Europe since 2011, and patients in more than 70 countries across the world currently choose it to temporary add subtle definition to their lips and reduce the appearance of what are technically referred to as “perioral lines.” The study that led to its approval in the United States involved 168 subjects, about two thirds of whom enjoyed fuller lips and the improved appearance of lines around the mouth through a year after their initial treatment.

Side effects common to the study tended to include those expected of all injectables: redness, swelling, bruising, and similar skin responses, which typically cleared up on their own within 30 days.

Learn more about Volbella®, as well as Dr. Derek Jones’ particular experience with Juvéderm® products, by calling 310-246-0495.

Don’t Hide Behind a Scarf This Fall

October 20, 2016 by nataliebirch Leave a Comment

Autumn’s arrival brings falling leaves (somewhere, if not Southern California), longer nights, and, of course, pumpkin spice everything. It also calls for a change in wardrobe. While Beverly Hills and West Hollywood aren’t known for their sweater weather, some people look forward to these late-in-the-year days as an excuse to hide their neck under a scarf. But with Kybella® and CoolSculpting®, Los Angeles residents don’t have to worry about obscuring their double chin behind thick layers of wool.

Either treatment is ideal for getting rid of submental fullness, that stubborn pocket of fat that becomes more pronounced when you look down.

Kybella® is an injectable that has deoxycholic acid as an active ingredient. That’s the body’s chemical for breaking down dietary fat, and when used in a dermatologic setting by a qualified physician, it can be precisely introduced into the neck area to destroy the unwanted fat cells there.

CoolSculpting® is a noninvasive treatment that pulls the heat out of a targeted area, chilling the fat cells to the point of death, but leaving everything else intact. There are a variety of CoolSculpting® applicators for use on various parts of the body, but the CoolMini™ is specifically designed for use on small pockets of fat cells, such as those found under the chin.

Both CoolSculpting® and Kybella® are effective, safe, and popular. Repeat treatments may be necessary with either method in order to achieve the full desired results. With each session scheduled weeks apart, you may actually need to wear a scarf to compensate for your lack of extra padding come winter.

Learn more about Kybella® and CoolSculpting® in Los Angeles, and discuss which treatment might be best for you, by calling Skin Care & Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills at 310-246-0495.

Maintain Your Already Youthful Face With a Routine and Clear + Brilliant®

October 14, 2016 by nataliebirch Leave a Comment

At Skin Care & Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills, dermatology is obviously our specialty. With the word “skin” in the name of the practice, you can be sure that we have everything from the epidermis to the subcutis covered—and more besides that. While our three physicians regularly treat a variety of conditions, both cosmetic and medical, they also encourage ongoing skin care and health to maintain a look not yet touched by many or any wrinkles, sagging, or spots.

The key to preserving clear and smooth skin is committing to a care regimen that includes:

• sun protection: This is vitally important for anyone who cares about the look of their skin, as well as their long-term health. Since ultraviolet radiation breaks down collagen, hyaluronic acid, and other beneficial skin components, venturing out without adequate sunscreen or shade is inviting problems. Wrinkles can form, tissues can start to sag more dramatically than they would due to aging alone, and skin cancer can take hold.

• hydration: Moist skin is happy skin. Drinking plenty of water and ensuring your skin does not dry out can keep skin pliant and strong, able to bounce back from the various expressions it is pulled into by facial muscles every day.

• regular, gentle cleaning: Oil, dirt, debris, and worse can accumulate on your skin every day, leading to problems that range from a dull appearance to acne to more significant problems. Be sure to wash and dry your face every day, but don’t go overboard. Using harsh chemicals can lead to dryness. Always be sure to remove any makeup each night.

• rest: Get plenty of sleep. Exhaustion, stress, and fatigue can hasten the breakdown of vital proteins and other elements in the skin, and sleep is when your body repairs itself. Take advantage of the longer nights of fall and winter to turn in earlier than normal and have a good, long rest for the sake of your skin.

In addition to these tips, the Skin Care & Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills team recommends Clear + Brilliant® to patients looking for something more as they maintain their radiant appearance. Unlike injectables and lasers designed to correct wrinkles and spots that have already formed, this laser is about preservation, allowing you to continue to enjoy the beautiful skin you’ve already worked so hard to maintain.

When it comes to dermatology, our Beverly Hills-area physicians can help no matter what your concern, from treating blemishes and lines that have developed to helping men and women develop a routine that will last them for years. It’s never too late—or early—to care for your skin.

Learn more about Clear + Brilliant® and other dermatology treatments and tips by calling us at 310-246-0495.

Trust Your Skin to Physicians in the Los Angeles Area

October 11, 2016 by nataliebirch Leave a Comment

There are a lot of places you could take your skin for medical or cosmetic care—and at each establishment, there are multiple staffers ready to handle your laser resurfacing, chemical peels, dermal fillers, and BOTOX® injections. Los Angeles is full of people who can technically provide the treatments that patients are seeking, but they do not all have the same education, skill, and experience.

While nurses and physician assistants are valuable members of many a practice, the team at Skin Care and Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills believes that dermatologists—doctors with a specific skin focus—are the most qualified people to care for your skin no matter the reason for the appointment, from discussing skin cancer treatment options to a routine Voluma® maintenance visit. That’s why Dr. Derek Jones heads up the physician-only practice, which also currently includes Dr. Naissan Wesley, as well as Dr. Jeanette Black, who completed a yearlong cosmetic dermatology fellowship under Dr. Jones and joined the practice as a physician in September.

Physicians have a higher degree of schooling and complete more rigorous tests and educational requirements, especially if they are certified by an official board and fellowship trained. Dermatologists certainly have more education and training specifically relevant to the skin-care field than dentists, salon employees, and others who may offer BOTOX® or similar treatments that fall outside of their typical scope of care. Dr. Jones personally served on investigations into the efficacy and safety of numerous cosmetic products now approved by the FDA and available to patients across the United States, including as the lead investigator for the Voluma® study.

Of course, patients are free to choose the practice or provider that best suits their needs and makes them feel most comfortable. The Skin Care and Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills team encourages anyone considering professional skin care to research the person providing the treatment and make a decision accordingly.

Learn more about the physician-only practice serving Beverly Hills, the greater Los Angeles area, and beyond by inquiring about a consultation online or calling 310-246-0495.
