The Best Ways to Fix Laugh Lines Without Surgery

June 27, 2020 by nataliebirch Leave a Comment

r non-invasive alternatives and home remedies for softening the appearance of deep, parenthesis lines, such as JUVÉDERM® ULTRA PLUS, which our Beverly Hills practice offers.

Each time we smile and laugh, our skin is stretched. As hyaluronic acid and collagen levels drop in the skin, nasolabial folds deepen. Facial skin—already affected by the pull of gravity and losing moisture and strength due to time and environmental damage—begins to droop around the mouth area.

Facial fillers like JUVÉDERM® are ideal for reducing signs of aging in this area, as well as the midface and cheeks. Many fillers are soft gels containing a form of hyaluronic acid, which is a natural substance that keeps the skin hydrated. Skin Care and Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills were investigators in the original JUVÉDERM® trials that led to the filler’s FDA approval, and are recognized among the top 1 percent of providers of JUVÉDERM® in the United States.

When injected directly in nasolabial folds, fillers reduce the depth of the wrinkles by adding volume beneath the skin and lifting the area, creating a smoother, more youthful look. JUVÉDERM® ULTRA PLUS is an ideal product for this as its thicker consistency makes it suitable for deeper skin folds.

Safe sun habits can also prevent laugh lines from becoming severe by slowing the effects of ultraviolet radiation damage. Shield your skin from UVA rays by applying a high SPF sunscreen to your face regularly, wear a wide-brimmed hat, and spend more time in the shade.

Smoking is another thing to avoid, as it causes the skin’s structure to weaken, while the action of pursing your lips for a puff will cause vertical lines to develop above the lips.

Finally, in addition to moisturizing, don’t forget to drink plenty of water to keep your skin supple.

Get more advice and explore your options for JUVÉDERM® ULTRA PLUS injections. Our Skin Care and Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills team is here to guide you on everything you need to know. How Does Air Pollution Impact Your Skin? Plus 5 Simple Protection Tips

June 19, 2020 by nataliebirch Leave a Comment

Sure, internal aging is one factor that can contribute to less-than-desirable skin. But the complex, extensive array of harmful elements you are exposed to from the environment each day are also to blame, especially for people living in crowded inner-city areas. Unfortunately, skin is unable to completely neutralize all of these toxic substances. Because of that, long-term exposure to pollution speeds up premature aging and may cause the skin to become dry, rough, dull, or discolored. It even causes permanent free-radical damage to skin cells and increases the risk of skin cancer. Our staff at Skin Care and Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills often sees dermatology patients who are concerned about protecting their skin from this type of damage.

Pollution is ugly and destructive. It breaks down collagen and lipids contained in the skin, causes rashes and breakouts, and can trigger flare-ups of existing inflammatory conditions like eczema. Cigarette smoke, traffic fumes, and more can all chip away at your perfect complexion. Your pores also are prone to becoming blocked by small particles, which abound in areas where the air is hazy.

Here are some basic ways to safeguard your skin against a damaging element that can literally be all around you:

  • One way to minimize lines, wrinkles, and dark spots that result from pollution is boosting your antioxidant use. Apply serums containing vitamins A, C, or E and eat a diet with plenty of antioxidant-rich foods.
  • Try a micellar water wash to clear stubborn debris from your pores.
  • Use tinted sunscreens or topical products containing red algae to fend off damage from blue light, such as phone and laptop screens. The sunscreen will also prevent  UV radiation damage.
  • Thoroughly wash your face every night with a mild cleanser to slough away the accumulation of dirt, dust, and grime.
  • If your skin needs a refresher, you can always try a microneedling session. This rejuvenation tactic causes tiny micro-injuries to the skin to promote the production of collagen and elastin and to stimulate capillaries. This improves overall texture and tone for brighter, clearer skin.

Get more advice on at-home skincare and explore in-office treatments available from our Skin Care and Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills team for neutralizing negative effects of pollution on your skin. Let us help you address your unique skin needs. To book an appointment for a future visit, call us at 310-246-0495 or write us a message.

What Is Maskne? How to Prevent Mask-Related Acne

June 12, 2020 by nataliebirch Leave a Comment

Wearing face coverings in public is believed to be a highly effective way of slowing the spread of COVID-19 as countries begin to ease restrictions on lockdowns. Masks lessen the number of airborne respiratory droplets containing the virus that are spread by breathing or coughing. However, the recent facemask requirements have lead to more people in the West Hollywood area seeking a dermatologist for skin irritation and flare-ups of pre-existing conditions. This phenomenon has become known as “maskne”—also referred to by the medical term acne mechanica—and is a common side effect among athletes who frequently wear helmets and other equipment.

As the weather heats up and summer months approach, weather conditions are harsher on the skin. The excessive heat and humidity mean increased oil production, and sweating under a mask for an extended time only makes things worse. Humid air is trapped in the mask, while the fabric causes friction and pressure on the skin, which creates ideal conditions for irritation and for blocked pores to trigger acne breakouts around the space where the mask is covering. Maskne is more likely to cause tiny whiteheads as opposed to deep cysts.

While uncomfortable, it’s important that we continue wearing masks to protect our health. That said, there are some things you can do to counteract the constant skin irritation:

Choose Lightweight Materials

Consider the type of fabric your mask is made from. It might be better to use a cloth mask instead of a surgical one. Soft, breathable materials like cotton will feel better on your skin and keep it cool.

Don’t Bother with Makeup

Makeup around the mouth and nose area will only worsen the buildup of irritants, so it’s better to use as none (or as little as possible).

Wash Your Mask Frequently

Bacteria can readily accumulate on masks, so it’s important to wash them each day to get rid of any dirt, debris, and other unwanted material. Using water and detergent can also help to kill many viruses on cloth masks.

For more tips on avoiding breakouts from wearing a facemask, talk to the team of board-certified dermatologists at Skin Care and Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills, serving the West Hollywood area and beyond. Call us today at 310.246.0495 or submit a contact form online.

Don’t Stop Celebrating Skin Cancer Awareness Month in 2020

June 5, 2020 by nataliebirch Leave a Comment

May has come and gone again—and with it, Skin Cancer Awareness Month—but that doesn’t mean we can relax our vigilance when it comes to skin cancer. Social distancing may be keeping people off beaches (in theory) in these warmer days of 2020, but minimizing the risk of this dangerous and potentially fatal skin condition requires much more than just cutting back on days spent outdoors. At Skin Care and Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills, melanoma prevention tips, diagnosis, and treatment recommendations are an important part of our work, which also includes public education.

We believe it’s important to emphasize to anyone and everyone that many skin cancers share something in common: development after exposure to ultraviolet radiation. This may be tanning beds or the sun, but the reality is that cancer can stem from the long-term impact of ongoing exposure, as well as the cumulative effect from shot but intense exposures—especially severe burns in childhood.

As we transition into summer, there are three important things we want you to remember:

1) Prevention: Wear Sunscreen

This is not just a good idea. It’s a vital strategy for minimizing skin cancer risk. There are so many sunscreen options these days, it should be easy to find a suitably effective type that feels good, fits your budget, and can be applied every day. Whenever you plan to leave the house, cover all exposed skin with a liberal layer of sunscreen first. Also, remember that it takes time to work, so give it about 15 minutes before you need it to truly protect you. Re-apply frequently when outdoors, and even more frequently if you are getting wet—whether from pool water, ocean waves, or sweat.

2) Detection: Be Aware of Your Own Skin

You live in your skin, so you are your own best resource when it comes to noticing skin problems. Skin cancers can resemble moles, but many have certain characteristics that should prompt further investigation: asymmetry, indistinct or notched borders, odd coloring, a larger-than-usual diameter, and a tendency to evolve over time. Any of these characteristics can contribute to what is known as the “ugly duckling” factor: If a mole stands out or looks weird when compared to the others around it, it may be cause for concern. This goes for anywhere on your body—not just places the regularly see the sun.

3) Diagnosis and Treatment

If you do spot a suspicious lesion, do not just hope it goes away on its own! The best way to fight skin cancer that has developed is to get it diagnosed and start treatment as soon as possible. We can assess your skin generally, as well as investigate any particular lesions. Let us know your concerns, and we will work with you to minimize damage and spread.

5 Rules for On-The-Go Skin Care When Traveling

May 5, 2020 by nataliebirch Leave a Comment

Going on exotic vacations is fun, but there’s no doubt that long-haul, overseas flights can be especially brutal on the skin—and even shorter flights can take their toll. Between the changes in weather and routine, different foods, and the stress of getting through airports, it’s easy to see why the skin doesn’t always handle vacations well.

Jet-lagged skin is the last thing anyone wants after returning from a relaxing holiday, but there are some things you can do to manage the problem of looking tired when you should appear refreshed. The key to keeping skin healthy lies in preparation. Our dermatology team at the Los Angeles area’s Skin Care & Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills share some simple tips to keep your skin in check next time you go on a long flight, cruise, road trip, or train ride.

Eat Well

Skin care may be the last thing on your mind when you’re getting away from it all, and you may find it difficult to make time for your skin appearance and health when traveling. If you want to change that, start by being careful about what you eat and drink before getting on the plane. It’s better to stay away from alcohol, caffeine, and spicy or heavy meals right before you travel, so that it’s easier for you to sleep.

Stay Hydrated

It’s critical to drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration. Also be sure to apply moisturizers and water sprays. Well-hydrated skin is happy skin.

Use Sun Protection

Interesting fact: You’re nearer to the sun when flying in an airplane, and damaging UV rays can still penetrate plane windows. This is why it’s extra important to use sunscreen. Remember that you may not be able to carry even small amounts of liquid through security, so be sure to apply it in sufficient amounts in advance.

Bring Along Your Products

It’s so important to cleanse your skin when traveling, as breakouts can easily occur when your pores become clogged with dead skin cells and impurities. There’s no reason to buy new products; you can take your normal facial cleanser and moisturizer with you—assuming you follow airline rules and regulations.

Give Your Skin Some Extra Love

Days before traveling, try scheduling a complete facial to get your skin into its best shape and protect it against future damage. You can choose microneedling to rejuvenate dull skin and sun spots after returning home.

Our team at Skin Care and Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills provides aesthetic and medical skin treatments for patients in the Los Angeles area. To learn more about our dermatology services, get in touch with us today by calling 310-246-0495 or sending us a message through our website.

Define Your Cheekbones with VOLUMA® XC

May 1, 2020 by nataliebirch Leave a Comment

Angular cheekbones—as seen on the faces of supermodels, comic book heroes, and movie stars—are viewed as an aesthetic ideal in many cultures. Some people believe they create a more mature, sophisticated, and adult look on women, or a more masculine appearance on men. As a popular dermal filler, VOLUMA® XC is often thought of as an injectable for making the face softer and more youthful. As explained by the dermatologists at Skin Care & Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills in the West Hollywood area, VOLUMA® XC can also create the illusion of slimmer cheeks and high, better-defined cheekbones for people who naturally have more of a round, baby face. And they should know: Dr. Derek Jones served as the lead investigator on the FDA’s Voluma® study, which preceded the product’s

When people refer to “high cheekbones,” they are talking about malar bones that rest close to the eyes beside the nose bridge, while “low cheekbones” are ones that sit nearer to the base of the nose. The structure and look of your cheekbones is mostly determined by your genetic background.

So how can VOLUMA® XC help to address facial angles determined by genetics? The hyaluronic acid-based injectable adds volume where introduced, making it ideal for filling in deep creases and providing a plumpness typically associated with youthful contours. Though it is primarily linked to a look of roundness, it can also be employed to essentially mimic the supportive nature of bone. Once injected into the deep tissue, the long-lasting gel makes the skin thicker and more supple while pulling in moisture. By adding volume to the center of the face to elevate the cheeks and create a stronger, more define cheekbone, injectors can also create the impression of a firmer jawline farther down.

Men, who have less fat in their faces when compared to women, often want to preserve the straight lines that define a masculine face, rather than add soft curves to plump up the apples of their cheeks like women often do. That said, the VOLUMA® XC injection process is customizable. Most importantly, patients should work with a skilled injector who has an artistic eye and listens to your specific goals.

Want to get more tips on JUVEDERM VOLUMA® XC and other similar injectable treatments? Skin Care and Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills sees cosmetic patients from West Hollywood and surrounding cities throughout the Los Angeles area. What is the Patient Satisfaction Rate for BOTOX®?

April 24, 2020 by nataliebirch Leave a Comment

National media outlets tend to make much of BOTOX® as a groundbreaking injectable, but are people really happier with the way their face looks after getting the treatment? Research suggests that, yes, the majority of patients believe BOTOX® is the real deal when it comes to their results. For the board-certified dermatologists based at Skin Care & Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills in the West Hollywood area, BOTOX® injections are definitely a popular option for women and men seeking to smooth out stubborn crow’s feet, frown lines, and forehead lines.

Statistics from many top review sites show that more than 95 percent of American patients were satisfied with the outcome from their BOTOX® treatments in past years. Additionally, a recent study conducted by the American Surgery Journal indicates that patients were 28% happier with their facial features after choosing BOTOX® injections for treating their glabellar lines.

There is even some research into the idea that BOTOX® can actually boost self-confidence or improve your mood by making it more difficult for you to show negative emotions (such as scowling, which is a major wrinkle-making expression).

The injectable version of botulinum toxin type A is most commonly used to calm such muscle activity that causes the development of wrinkles over time. As we go through life and make various facial expressions, patterns emerge where certain muscles constantly pull the skin into folds. For example, you may frown often when concentrating or reading, forming wrinkles between the brows.

When Allergan’s BOTOX® is injected into the tissue in the targeted area, it disrupts the transmission of signals between the nerves and muscles. As a result, the muscles won’t contract as frequently, and the surface appears smoother and more refreshed. With virtually no preparation, downtime, anesthesia, or side effects involved, and injections taking only a few minutes to be completed, it’s easy to see why patients enjoy the convenience of this non-surgical treatment.

But is there more to boosting self confidence than enjoying a younger look with relative ease?

The idea is that consistently positive expressions can create a feedback loop that improves mood, which leads to more positive expressions, and so on. Is this because we like to see smiles—even when coming from our own faces in the mirror? Or does the physical act of making a happy face trigger a biological process that improves how we feel?

The research continues, but in the meantime, anyone considering BOTOX® should know that the numbers do show that the injectable comes with high satisfaction rates. Want to find out if BOTOX® is the best solution for your own wrinkles? Before you make a decision, talk to the dermatology team at Skin Care & Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills, with experience as principal investigators on the FDA study exploring BOTOX® for crow’s feet. Get in contact by calling 310-246-0495 or submit your request online.

What Are Off-Label Uses of Injectable Fillers?

April 17, 2020 by nataliebirch Leave a Comment

Dermal fillers are soft synthetic or natural substances designed to add volume to the layers of skin as a replacement for collagen, hyaluronic acid, and other elements that make it supple and firm. Fillers counteract deep wrinkles, and some types lift or enlarge certain features to create a more pleasing, youthful appearance. In addition to their standard, on-label uses, there are also other benefits of JUVEDERM® and other injectable fillers that our Los Angeles-based Skin Care and Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills team knows many patients may not be aware.

While Dr. Derek Jones and other board-certified dermatologists at the practice have contributed greatly to numerous dermal filler FDA trials, the term “off-label” simply means that the treatment is being used in a way that it is not advertised for and has not been officially specified by the FDA. This may mean, for example, using a medication to treat a condition it is not approved for, administering it in a different way, or changing the dosage to better suit the patient.

These under-the-radar uses, also known as off-label indications, are common, legal, and generally safe when performed by a provider who knows what they’re doing.

Physicians have the discretion to use FDA-approved drugs for other uses if they determine, based on their expertise, that the medications would be suitable for a patient and have discussed the option with them.

For instance, Juvederm Volbella® XC gel is approved for lip augmentation and minimizing lip lines but is often also used on the delicate tear troughs area to correct hollowness and dark circles under the eyes. Providers sometimes use Juvederm Voluma® XC to fill out sunken-in temples.

RADIESSE® is a semi-permanent soft tissue filler made of calcium particles and FDA-approved for treating moderate to severe wrinkles and folds. It is also used by some doctors in a hyper-diluted form for cellulite or dimples on the butt and thighs, or irregularities on the abdomen. It is believed to provide structural support to some of these areas, firming them up in the process. Some other popular off-label uses for dermal fillers include adding volume to earlobes, liquid rhinoplasties, and treating knee and elbow wrinkles.

COVID-19 and Your Skin: Three Things to Remember

April 4, 2020 by nataliebirch Leave a Comment

Patients come to Skin Care and Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills for dermatologic services, so COVID-19—the novel coronavirus responsible for the current pandemic—is not something we diagnose or treat. However, as physicians, we are devoted to promoting health in our community. With that in mind, here are three things we would like our patients and others to keep in mind during this time of disruption:

Wash Your Hands

All doctors are rigorously trained in the art of hygiene. We keep everything clean—constantly—and that especially includes our hands. Please, practice good hand-washing at home and wherever else you may be. You touch so many surfaces each day, including your face, which makes it easy for viruses to move from a doorknob or keyboard or countertop to your nose or mouth. In order to ensure a thorough and proper wash, use soap (not just water), count 20 to 30 seconds, and scrub the entire time. Don’t let the stream from the faucet just push the soap off your hands.

Keep Your Distance

All throughout the country, and especially in California, the idea of “social distancing” has been implemented in an effort to minimize contact between people. The idea is to give viruses fewer opportunities to spread. Some cities have instituted orders that people stay home, while others have merely recommended that citizens voluntarily practice self-isolation. Whatever your local rules, please be wise about your interactions with others. Cancel nonessential appointments, and absolutely refrain from visiting anyone if you have a cough, fever, or shortness of breath.

Don’t Ignore Other Medical Issues

The national (and global) focus right now seems to be on lungs, but people can—and will—continue to have medical problems that impact other parts of the body, such as their skin. Melanoma, for example, is a very serious form of skin cancer, with rapid diagnosis and treatment vital to as successful an outcome as possible. If you have a medical question related to skin health, call our team at Skin Care and Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills at 310-246-0495 to get answers as to what you should do next. For other inquiries, you can write us a message online.
