Patients are often curious about whether topical skin care products can be an alternative to cosmetic dermatology treatments. Our Los Angeles-based Skin Care and Laser Physicians of Beverly Hills team explains that if you want more dramatic results and to see improvements sooner, minimally invasive treatments are still the best option for certain types of cosmetic concerns. With that in mind, the short answer is no: Unfortunately, there aren’t any skin creams that can produce results that are superior—or even similar—to what is possible with injectables.
Expression wrinkles develop because our facial expressions cause the skin on the surface to be continually pulled and stretched when our muscles are tense. As this skin loses elasticity over time, these lines become deeper.
While skin products can restore hydration and provide other valuable ingredients—beneficial for maintaining youthful, healthy skin—they can’t produce results that are comparable with BOTOX®. Unlike topical skin creams, BOTOX® contains a protein called botulinum toxin type A in a diluted, purified form.
The injectable works on key muscles by intercepting messages from the nerves that promote muscle contractions. This relaxes the muscles so that wrinkles can’t form.
Facial fillers, on the other hand, address static wrinkles that are visible even when the face isn’t moving, as well as hollow areas due to loss of collagen. Fillers can also augment certain features to enhance the structure and symmetry of the face.
There aren’t any topical creams that can penetrate the skin and affect the muscles like BOTOX® can or create volume visible right away below the skin like facial fillers. The large molecules in skin products simply can’t penetrate the skin deeply enough to quickly add volume and lift.
However, good skin care products may help to preserve the effects of the injectables between appointments.
Even though injectables produce dramatic results, they shouldn’t be thought of as a “quick fix.” It’s still important to maintain a consistent, proper skin care routine to make sure that your skin is in good shape. Injectables like fillers address aesthetic concerns, but they are no replacement for the benefits of sun protection, adequate sleep, retinol, and antioxidants for preserving youthful skin.
