We all want a sculpted, sleek jawline and chin, but genetics can sometimes make that seem impossible—especially if you have a tendency to store fat below the jaw area. Whether your double chin is caused by loose skin, a buildup of fat, or a recessed or underdeveloped bone structure on the lower part of the face, chances are good that you’re willing to try any method that works for improving this frustrating problem. If your problem is mainly caused by diet- and exercise-resistant fat on the jawline area, the most effective method for treating it may be Kybella® for double chin removal. Our Los Angeles-based practice has some tips to make aftercare for this procedure easier—but keep in mind that one of the best things about this minimally invasive procedure is that there isn’t much downtime or maintenance.
There are some minor side effects associated with Kybella®. Most patients will experience some minor bruising, swelling, and numbness below the chin area after an injection session. Since the deoxycholic acid in the treatment dissolves fat, it’s possible that your skin may have an inflammatory reaction—and this is what causes the swelling.
Sometimes, the swelling may peak a few days into recovery. The residual swelling usually resolves on its own within a few weeks, but there are steps you can take to promote healing and recover at a faster rate.
Applying ice packs or cold compresses right after the treatment is one way of managing the side effects. Just don’t leave them on for too long. Applying warm compresses several days after the treatment may also sometimes be beneficial. Other ways of keeping swelling and pain down include wearing a chin strap for added compression, firmly massaging the chin area, and taking over-the-counter antihistamines and pain relievers. It’s recommended that you avoid heavy exercise for 24 hours, avoid exposure to high-temperature environments, sleep on your back with your head elevated, and avoid consumption of alcohol or sodium for a few days.
