Juvéderm Voluma™ XC is an injectable gel, which means it is introduced into precisely targeted areas on patients’ faces via a short needle. As a facial filler, Juvéderm Voluma™ XC was designed to minimize discomfort. It contains a small amount of a synthetic anesthetic known as lidocaine, which reduces the amount of pain patients feel at the injection site. Lidocaine is also sometimes applied topically, as a cream, to numb the skin.

Prior to any Juvéderm Voluma™ XC injections, Dr. Jones may apply such an anesthetic, depending on the desires or nature of the patient. He will also typically pause after the first injection, giving the prescription product’s lidocaine an opportunity to begin working and further numb the area to be treated.

At this point, he will continue with the Juvéderm Voluma™ XC injections, which some patients describe as a light pinch or slight pressure. After the injections, Dr. Jones may apply an ice pack to the affected area to help minimize any immediate discomfort and reduce swelling. This will also help to reduce any residual pain in the days after the treatment, though many patients choose to continue applying ice packs for relief.

Studies into Juvéderm Voluma™ XC have revealed that patients tended to rate their post-procedure pain levels as a 3, with 0 being no pain at all and 10 being excruciating pain.
